How to control the accuracy of ball screw processing

Leave a message

The positioning accuracy of C3  ball screw is usually measured by 'lead accuracy'.How can high-precision control in the processing process be achieved? Ball screw cyclone cutting  and  straightening  is very important processing steps.

The reason why C3 ball screw cyclone cutting (cyclone milling) can achieve extremely high machining accuracy, and even replace grinding in some applications, is mainly due to its unique cutting method and excellent control over heat and vibration.

The following are the core principles for achieving high precision:

1. Unique Cutting Method: Tangential Entry and Single Pass Forming
Tangential Entry: Unlike traditional turning with a 'hard pull,' the tool in cyclone cutting enters and exits the workpiece tangentially. This smooth motion reduces the instantaneous cutting impact, making the cutting process very stable, thereby achieving excellent surface roughness (usually reaching 0.4-0.8).
Single Pass Forming: It can machine the complete thread profile from a round bar in one pass, avoiding repeated positioning errors and accumulated stepping errors from multiple passes.

2. Excellent Thermal Deformation Control
Heat Follows the Chip: Due to the extremely high cutting speed, most of the generated heat is quickly carried away with the chips, rather than being conducted into the workpiece.
Minimal Workpiece Temperature Rise: The workpiece essentially remains at room temperature during machining (only a few degrees above room temperature), preventing geometric changes caused by thermal expansion and contraction, ensuring precise lead accuracy.

3. High Rigidity and Stability of the System
Low-Speed Spindle: During machining, the workpiece rotates slowly, and the dynamic stability of the machine spindle is very good, reducing vibration interference from the machine itself.
Multi-Tool Coordination: The cyclone milling disc typically has multiple forming cutters arranged, distributing the load evenly through high-frequency intermittent cutting, further enhancing the rigidity of the machining process.

Screw Whirling

The straightening of C3 ball screws is a key process to ensure their motion accuracy, such as straightness and positioning accuracy. In practical operations, precision control mainly relies on high-precision testing methods, scientific support and pressing schemes, and targeted compensation measures.

The following are core methods for controlling the precision of straightening:

1. Use of High-Precision Detection Systems
The straightening process is essentially a cycle of 'detection-correction-redetection,' and accurate measurement is fundamental:
- Laser measurement technology: Using a laser interferometer or straightness tester, monitor the straight-line motion trajectory of the screw along its entire travel in real time and check whether deviations meet accuracy levels such as C3 or C5.
- Visual detection system: Using an automatic control system based on vision sensors, automatically collect data from different sections of the screw and determine runout through preset algorithms, reducing human reading errors.
- Dial indicator/micrometer assistance: In traditional manual straightening, both ends of the screw are mounted on V-blocks. By rotating the screw and observing dial indicator deflection, the bending points and amounts can be identified.

2. Precise Adjustment of Mechanical Support and Pressure
The physical forces applied during straightening directly affect the final result:
- Axial preload control: Before straightening, the screw needs to be firmly clamped. By adjusting the compression amount of the fine-tuning washer on the ring, axial preload can be precisely controlled to prevent unexpected displacement during straightening.
- Multi-point support scheme: According to the length-to-diameter ratio of the screw, set the positions of V-blocks or support seats reasonably. Support points are usually placed on both sides of bending areas, with pressure points at the highest points to ensure effective pressure on the deformed region.
- Segmental straightening method: For longer screws, detection and straightening should be done in segments. Typically, every 300mm is used as an evaluation unit, ensuring that the straightness deviation within any 300mm is within permissible limits (such as 0.1mm/300mm).

3. Control of Thermal Deformation and Material Properties
Straightening is not only about restoring geometric shape but also involves stress relief:
- Temperature compensation: Heat generated during processing and straightening can cause thermal expansion. Using a hollow ball screw with a cooling system can suppress longitudinal deformation caused by temperature rise, thus stabilizing post-straightening accuracy.
- Elimination of internal stress: Straightening pressure may induce residual stress inside the material. High-precision screws usually undergo stress-relief treatment after rough straightening. Fine straightening or grinding is then performed after stress release to prevent later spring-back deformation.
