2. Q: What types of ball circulation methods are there? What are their characteristics?
A: They are mainly divided into internal circulation and external circulation, which are key factors affecting the structure and performance of the ball screw:
Internal circulation: The balls circulate through a recirculator inside the nut, moving entirely within the nut's raceway and not exposed outside. The advantages are compact structure, smaller radial size, and low operating noise; the disadvantage is that it requires high machining accuracy, and its load capacity is slightly lower than that of external circulation.
External circulation: The balls are returned to the starting end via a ball return tube connecting the ends of the raceway outside the nut. The advantage is simpler processing and higher load capacity, suitable for heavy-load scenarios; the disadvantage is a slightly larger radial size and slightly higher noise than internal circulation when running at high speeds.
3. Q: Do ball screws have a self-locking function? Why?
A: No, they do not have a self-locking function. This is because the resistance from rolling friction is very small. When the ball screw is installed vertically, the nut (or screw) can move in the reverse direction simply due to the weight of the load. Therefore, when using ball screws for vertical lifting equipment, a brake motor or external brake must be used to prevent the load from falling when power is cut off.
